Tummy time… This has got to be one of the most promoted activities for newborns with close to political vigor. Having read a few posts from Google on this topic, I am getting the feeling that if I fail to put in enough tummy time for my daughter, she will never graduate high school or something. That of course is a far cry from the truth. I have this NY Times article to thank for a more complete perspective on this issue. But, I’m not planning to join the fray on this one.
We do of course try to give our baby as much tummy time as her schedule allows. However… Tummy time and diaper change and bathing and sleep; these are a few of her least favorite things. The other day, my wife and I compliantly did some tummy time with her as usual, to which she unreservedly expressed her discontent. Babies don’t talk but if she did, I think it might have been:
“You make me work, I make you pay.”
And yes, we did pay. After a mere 1 minute of tummy time, she embarked on an inconsolable crying fit. My wife tried everything to pacify our daughter to no avail, after which she singsongily asked, “Do you want to be fed? Or do you want to be held?”
I then whispered to her ear, “I think she wants an apology…”
